Monument’s Micaela Bartlett claimed her first win of the season on Monday night for the Girls Alpine Ski Team. Bartlett’s time of 47.06 seconds was the fastest out of the 30 girls who competed from around Berkshire County.
Monday marked the first of three slalom races for the high school season. “I was surprised and I was not expecting it. I know other skiers in the league and I felt some were stronger skiers than me,” stated Bartlett.
Since she was two years old, Bartlett has been dominating her competition. Just like many other super-fast ski racers, Bartlett sports a GS suit when she races. “GS suits make you faster, and if I want to be fast I have to wear a GS suit.” These skin-tight suits have been proven to take as much as .5 seconds off a racer’s time. For Bartlett, this can be the difference between life and death. “My freshman year I beat another racer by 1/100 of a second.”
Among the other racers was Bartlett’s long time rival, Ella King, from Lenox. “I didn’t see her crash but I saw her going really slow,” added Bartlett. King, also a very experienced ski racer, was halfway through the course when she washed out going around an undergate. According to Monument’s Tyler Harrington,a member of the boys’ team, that particular undergate caused problems for several other racers. “I noticed a few ski racers were thrown off by that section of the course,” stated Harrington.
In the boys’ race, Monument’s top racer was Raphael Kummer-Landeau who came in 7th place overall.
The next slalom race is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18th at 5:30 pm at Bousquet.
