For the third year in a row both the Monument Boys and Girls Soccer teams will compete in the Division III Western Mass Tournament. Seedings for the tournament were released Wednesday afternoon after MIAA officials met in Franklin, Massachusetts.

With an overall record of 9-6-2, the boys team is seeded seventh. “The seventh seed is fine with me. I think we are in a good position,” said senior co-captain Daniel Newey. The Spartans will take on the Pathfinder Pioneers in the first round of the tournament. “It feels great to get one last chance to play on that field,” Newey said.

The Pioneers (11-5-1) are the tenth seed and finished second in their division. Although the Pioneers do not share any mutual opponents as the Spartans, Newey believes they will match up well. “Their forwards will match up perfectly with our defenders,” he stated. “I am confident that we will be fine,” The Spartans’ main concern will be Pathfinder’s Teddy King. King has 24 goals and two assists to his name for the season. “I’m anticipating we will man mark him,” Newey said.

Last season, the Spartans were the same exact seed. They faced Putnam at home in the first round and went on to a comfortable 3-0 win. “To be able to celebrate with your team and the fans after you score is amazing,” Newey explained. He encourages all students to attend the game. “Playing in front of fans is so much better than playing with nobody watching,” Newey stated. This will be the last time the seniors play at Spartan Field. “I want to win and be able to celebrate on the field and in the locker room for one last time,” said midfielder Mitch Amstead.

The game is scheduled to kickoff at 6:00 PM Friday. Come out, be loud and show some support for the Spartans as they make a run in the playoffs.
