Monument’s Micaela Bartlett took home third place in the first Grand Slalom race of the season on Monday night. This race marks the first time in the 2016-2017 Alpine Ski team season that Bartlett has been defeated.
The original date for the first GS race of the season was scheduled for January 23rd. A lack of snow and proper conditions forced Bousquet Mountain to postpone the race until February 6th. “The delayed start had its pluses and minuses. On the one hand we got extra time to practice the ever so technical discipline of SL. On the other hand, it left us with being able to only hold one GS practice prior to two GS races, which obviously isn’t ideal,” stated Monument coach Brian Seminara.
Despite the inconvenience, Bartlett was still able to ski at a competitive level and claim her fourth top three finish. “I thought my time was a little slow for how I thought I skied the course, but that’s how ski racing goes,” said Bartlett. Her time of 44.08 seconds was not enough to hold off Lenox’s Ella King (42.23) and Taylor Knight (43.91). Bartlett was not completely happy with her run down the course, however. “I wish I was more aggressive and took a straighter line,” she added.
In the boy’s race, Monument’s Raphael Kummer-Landeau, a sophomore and first year member of the team, placed 8th overall.
The next GS race will be held on Wednesday, February 8th at Bousquet.
