While some students are still scrambling to finish their college applications, senior Crista Cardillo already knows her fate.  After a trip to Virginia to visit her sister, Carina, Cardillo fell in love with the University of Mary Washington (UMW). Not only do they have the education and campus that Cardillo was looking for, but they also have a division three soccer team.

“I chose it because it was different than any other school I’d seen. It is a beautiful state, it was warm and everybody was very happy there. The school was a better fit for me than any other that I had chosen and the soccer team is very good as well, but I chose the school first because of the education,” Cardillo explained.  After spending more time at the school and talking with the coaches, Cardillo knew UMW was the right place for her.

After an “early read” (when the admissions office gets a look at a student’s transcript before the official application process begins), Cardillo applied Early Decision and has already received her acceptance.

Even though Cardillo excelled as a high school soccer player and was considered a formidable force across western Massachusetts, she knows she will have to work hard for a spot at the next level. “I will approach next year as a freshman again, needing to work my butt off to see any playing time on the field. It is a goal me and as kind of a stepping stone to where I want to go in life, and where I need to work really really hard to get where I want to be.” Cardillo said. Cardillo understands that she will have to go above and beyond the school’s two season schedule and vigorous weight room hours to come out as strong as she did at Monument.

Not only will Cardillo be working out, but she’ll also be attempting to gain more soccer IQ.  “Mary Washington is very concise on what they do and they’re very particular on what they want, how they play, and how they practice.” Cardillo explained. There will be a new challenge awaiting Cardillo in warm Virginia, but it is one she looks forward to. “I already got accepted, so I’m stress free now knowing that and can just work really hard and focus on my work and soccer.”
