Every six weeks the Monument Student Book Club meets in the library on a quiet afternoon. Here they discuss about the readings they have done in those six weeks and talk about the book and all their opinions about the text. After they are done discussing the current selection that they are on they then discuss and form a final decision on the next book victim they will tackle. Book club has 15 members on the official list but only about 7 to 10 show up each meeting.

The current book they are now reading is called The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid. “This one had some mixed reviews about it, it wasn’t everyone’s favorite book that’s for sure,” stated Staunton, the book club founder. The members of the book club have read three other books — Ready Player One, Six of Crows, and Scythe. “Now these three everyone really enjoyed,” Staunton explained.

Staunton is also starting to prepare for the summer reading program that she does every year. The program lets you read how many or how few books you want to on your free time. At the beginning of the new school year,  you can present the list to Staunton and you’ll receive all different types of prizes. Prizes in the past included passes for a free homework, bonus points on a test or a free gourmet lunch.

If you’re looking for a new club or pastime, join book club. It opens the world to new books and maybe some new friends, one page at a time. The group meets next on Wednesday, June 14 and they’ll be discussing I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.
