Tired of walking aimlessly through the town of Great Barrington? Not in the mood to get kicked out of the various stores and shops for ‘hanging around’ with friends? Or maybe you can relate to just sitting in Tom’s Toys parking lot because, let’s face it, what else is there to do? Here’s an idea: Why not spend your time at Railroad Street Youth Project’s newly renovated Drop-In Center? With couches, a row of Mac desktops, and a ping-pong table, your boredom will surely be cured.

In 1998, a 19-year-old woman saw that the young community of South County was struggling against drug abuse. Rather than continue to stand by while she attended her friends’ funerals, for those who lost the battle to these drugs, she decided to make a change. From this story came the creation of the RSYP. The non-profit organization offers an array of services such as apprenticeship programs, mediators, counseling, and it’s newly refurbished drop-in center for a place to come hang out, do homework, and share ideas.

Want to start a new and inventive project but need assistance? Why not propose it to RSYP’s Youth Operational Board? The YOB is made up of young people who make decisions to approve proposals for projects that are presented to them and decide what they are willing to fund with RSYP’s annual budget. Meetings are held every Tuesday at 4:00pm at the Drop-In Center, which is located next to the skate park on Bridge Street. Meetings are open to anyone who would like to present an idea or just come and listen to the imaginative thoughts of their peers.

The goal of RSYP is to support its own mission while also supporting your mission. Next time you find yourself dozing off by the blandness of your day, why not take a stroll down to the Drop-In Center. Maybe you’ll take part in a YOB meeting, or even a game of pinball on RSYP’s own beloved pinball machine. The Drop-In Center is currently open weekdays from 2pm-5 or 7pm and is working to be available late on weekend nights. Take your creativity to RSYP and see how they will help you transform it.
